| RIVER FLOAT TRIP DESCRIPTION: Interior
Alaska's Gulkana River is Federally protected and a Designated
National, Wild and Scenic Waterway offering a variety of
not too demanding whitewater, easily viewable wildlife and excellent
sport fishing opportunities. This small, alluring clear
water river begins in the plateau region of the Alaska Range
near the scenic Denali Highway and flows southward through
mixed tundra and forest; finally dumping into the great
Copper river. The high plateau is worthy of note due to
the fact that three major Alaska river origins are within
very close proximity to one another, yet drain into far
different end-points including Prince William Sound, Cook
Inlet, and the Bering Sea. It is also the foraging grounds
of the Nelchina Caribou heard summering in Alaska, then
wintering following migration routes into Canada.
On the upper stretches of the Gulkana River (meaning
the crooked river in native Ahtna), the Arctic Grayling
fishing is phenomenal. Hook-up ratios for even the beginning
angler is superb. Intermediate and advanced fly fishers
get strikes on perchance 85% of casts. Mid river has a
fun section of canyon rapids that are easily scouted or
portaged, and many pools filled with
a variety of fish. The lower stretches support premier
Salmon fishing with flies, spinners, bottom bouncers,
plugs, or spoons and just about any other types of tackle
crafted riverside.
Historic perspective suggests that as early as
Statehood in 1959, the Gulkana became a known favorite
destination and somewhat protected from private ownership.
This determination stemmed from the river being the perfect
setting for public recreation as well as a commercial
value for guided float trips, sport fishing, hunting,
and wildlife viewing. Today's influences on the Gulkana
can be viewed as the Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline crosses
the river at the Ol' Sourdough Roadhouse take out and
further recreational pursuits.
This trip is a perfectly suited float trip for
up-start fly fishermen, families introducing their young
children to the outdoors, and individuals wishing to
sharpen their wilderness skills before tackling a more remote,
more challenging
trip by themselves. Note: The Gulkana River is also one of the best
multi-day river
float trips in Alaska for those that have concerns about flying
in small aircraft. |
