LAKE TOURING DESCRIPTION: Begin
your Alaska wilderness Expedition by flying commercial airliner from Anchorage to the
southwestern fishing town of King Salmon. King Salmon is
the jumping off point en-route to Becharof Lake and the
Becharof National Wildlife Refuge, located in the
northeastern part of the Alaska Peninsula near Katmai
National Park and Preserve. Becharof Lake is Alaska's
second largest lake, thirty-seven miles long and fifteen
miles wide. The Becharof region is one of the largest
(1.2 million acres!!!), and one of the most recent entries into the
National Wildlife Refuge System (established in 1980).
Within Becharof's National Wildlife Refuge seldom explored boundaries lay a vast
mixture of shoreline, landscape and wildlife. The terrain
features include volcanic peaks and vents, rolling
tundra hills and flats, grass wetlands and ponds, even
seaside cliffs and strange geologic formations. The ever shifting character of the
countryside provides excellent habitat diversity.
Millions of birds! Sea birds and waterfowl stage here
during mass migration periods before traveling in spring further north to
nesting grounds and their return stopover come the onset
of the late Fall season. Hawks and eagles find summer prey.
Shorebirds and Willow Ptarmigan thrive along the lake's
extensive coastline. Over thirty species of land mammals live here
including hundreds of Alaska Brown Bear, Moose, Caribou,
Red Fox, Wolf, and Wolverine. Red Salmon swarm by the
millions upon millions into Becharof Lake to spawn.
Becharof Lake is named for the Russian naval navigator
that was stationed on nearby Kodiak Island in 1788. The
Pacific coast of Becharof was important to Russian and
subsequent European as well as American fur traders
seeking Sea Otters, Northern Fur Seals, Walruses, Steller's
Sea Lions and Harbor Seals. Though temporary
trading settlements of the early commercial fur trade were set up
in the vicinity along the ocean coast
for the majority of fur bearing expeditions; there is little
evidence that the fur seekers traveled inland with much
interest or any extended purpose. The only thing unmistakably apparent is that Becharof
Lake is nearly the same wild place in today's world that it
was long before the early explorers gave it a name. |
