RIVER TRIP DESCRIPTION: By floatplane
we take off from Anchorage's Lake Hood, the world's
largest floatplane base. Once airborne, we head 150
miles southwest toward the craggy, glaciered, and
wing-pinched walls of Lake Clark Pass. The flight-seeing
through Lake Clark Pass is breathtaking and filmmaking. Many guests shoot
just about all their media cards, video footage, or film well before reaching our put-in
at Upper-Landing at the far downstream end of Lake Clark on the
Newhalen River.
The immense power and grand volume of the Newhalen River
is born from the snow and ice fields of the Chigmit
Mountains and the 4 million acre, Lake Clark National
Park and Preserve. The awesome wonder of the Newhalen is distinctly different
from most of Alaska's other glacial, high-volume,
extremely swift, and turbulent whitewater
rivers. This river is astoundingly turquoise clear with
absolutely premier sport fishing. This clarity is due to the glacial-filtering
effect of 75-mile long and very deep Lake Clark, one of
Alaska's largest lakes. The Newhalen River, its tributary streams,
and great lakes are prime Sockeye Salmon spawning grounds, contributing to
over 16 percent of
the world's commercial wild Red Salmon harvest. Sport
fishing is outstanding for all species of Pacific Salmon, Arctic
grayling, Char, Lakers, and Rainbow Trout. The Newhalen is
also known for its abundant wildlife, including Brown
Bear, Moose, and Caribou.
As a Big-Water, high-volume, and high-velocity whitewater river, the
Class V+ Newhalen Gorge and Petrov Falls section demands the greatest respect. It
is very deep, very powerful, and very violent. There are extreme ledge
drops, considerable sized standing waves, radical eddy
lines with swirling whirlpools, and radical rock pillar
formations. Throughout its
course, there are eight especially dangerous and turbulent rapids. The Newhalen's dynamic
flow ultimately empties into Lake Iliamna, Alaska's
great lake. Our take-out is in the native village of
Iliamna where many villagers still practice subsistence
lifestyles, seasonally netting bounty of fresh wild fish
and continually hunting the areas game species.
Looking for untamed and terrific adventure? This river
is a world-class - rivaling the best of Big-Water
experiences run anywhere on the planet. The Newhalen Gorge whitewater
trip defines AWESOME ADVENTURE!
This BIG WATER run is for those seeking to a descent
down one the most wild whitewater rivers in
the Last Frontier with only limited time to explore
where few have paddled before! |
