RIVER TRIP DESCRIPTION: By floatplane
from Lake Hood, you'll be flying westerly through wingspan-wide,
jagged and snow covered mountain passes into the Lake
Clark Region. After being enticed to shoot your entire
float
trips supply of media at hanging glaciers and rugged
summits, a pair of sapphire lakes materializes
on the horizon. Framed by the surrounding peaks of Lake
Clark National Park and Preserve lies Gem-like Twin Lakes, the
put in for your remote Alaska float trip adventure.
The Chilikadrotna River spills swiftly west for 60 miles to
its confluence with the Mulchatna River. The Chili's crystal
clear water dashes swiftly through the spruce forested hill country
where river running skills are prerequisite for
negotiating sweepers, strainers, occasional small log jams, boulder gardens,
shallows, narrows, and rapids that in addition demand a
certain level of alertness at all
times. One stretch of the river drops 50 feet in 3/4 of
a mile. Not a difficult whitewater stretch, still
very swift.
Historically, Aleuts and Eskimos settled this part of
Alaska. When the Russians arrived, Athabaskins moved
into the area displacing the Aleuts and Eskimos. The
late 1800s brought American surveyors, commercial
traders, and gold prospectors. Today, this region has
the richness of the remote wilderness. Prospecting
is not a thing of the past in this area and is currently
being surveyed. This wilderness area is more
valuable kept wild and should be protected.
The Chilikadrotna River provides spectacular scenery
throughout, offers premier angling for several species
of fish, thrilling stretches of fun whitewater,
excellent camping spots, and
super opportunities for viewing wildlife. This river
drainage was once home to the one of the largest populations of Barren
Ground Caribou in Alaska. Caribou still roam the
riversides, however the herd is broken up into much
smaller bands and covers an even more vast amount of
territory today.
